A herniated disc is a problem with one of the rubber pads (discs) found between the bones (vertebrae) that make up the spine. A disk has a soft, gelatinous center (nucleus) surrounded by a harder rubber layer (annulus). Sometimes called a herniated disc or herniated disc, a herniated disc occurs when part of the nucleus is pushed out through a tear in the annulus. A herniated disc, which can occur anywhere in the spine, most often occurs in the lower back. Depending on where the herniated disc is, it can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in an arm or leg.
